Peer Review Process

Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology receives more submissions than it can publish (15 out of 100). It is unfortunate to say that when we accept one paper that means another good paper must be rejected.

Initial Internal Editorial Review

To avoid unnecessary delay to get a decision about the manuscript, initially we do internal editorial review. It takes about 3-10 days. Using this method, about one-third of all submitted manuscripts are rejected without peer-review. That is, initial rejection is often much quicker. In that case, authors have the option to submit their manuscript to another journal without unnecessary delay. The usual reasons for rejection at this stage are a) insufficient originality, b) the absence of important message to the scientific community, c) not written according to our journal style, or d) ill-written. We may screen a manuscript by reading only the abstract. So, the abstract should be structured (without subheading and paragraph), clear, complete and accurate as possible.

Peer-reviewed manuscripts

Among the all submitted manuscripts, Mini-review, Meta-analysis, Clinical Trial, Visual Experiment and Research Article are peer-reviewed. One exception is that “Letter to the Editor” is not peer-reviewed.

External Review

If any manuscript passes the first step and meets the Criteria for Publication, then the manuscript is sent to two independent external reviewers for comment/advice. The whole process is single-blinded. This is done in order to save the time of the authors as well as reduce the workload of the peer-reviewers.

Selection of Reviewers

Reviewer selection is the critical and important part to the publication process. The choice of selection is based on several factors, including a) expertise, b) reputation, c) capability of giving recommendations, d) giving enough time to review and e) our own previous experience of a reviewer's characteristics. For example, the reviewer who is slow, careless, or do not provide definite comment is avoided.

Timing

Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology is committed to give rapid editorial decision and publication. To achieve the goal, an efficient editorial process is a valuable service both to our authors and to the scientific community as a whole. Therefore, we request the reviewers to respond promptly within three days to agree to do the review process. If a reviewer does not agree/respond to review a manuscript, then we request another reviewer. Once a reviewer agrees to review, the maximum allocated time period of review is 3 weeks. A soft reminder email is sent to the reviewer when the allocated time is over. This process performs well.

Editorial Decision

The editor takes the final decision based on the reviewers' comment. The decision may be any one of the followings:

a) Accept for Publication, with or without any minor editorial revision

b) Inform the corresponding author to Revise the Manuscript to address the specific concerns before a final decision is reached. Submission of revised manuscript does not ensure the accpetance

c) Reject, but inform the corresponding author that further write-up might justify a Resubmission

d) Decline Submission, typically on grounds of specialist interest, lack of novelty, insufficient conceptual advance or major technical and/or interpretational problems

Confidential

Editor, editorial board members, authors and reviewers keep confidential of all details of the editorial and peer review process on submitted manuscripts. Even identities of the reviewer are not disclosed to the corresponding author. In addition, reviewers maintain the confidentiality of the manuscript.

Publication Frequency

The journal publishes four online issues (January, April, July and October) per year. The journal started its publication in 2006 in both print and online issues twice in a year. Subsequently, in 2012, the print version is stopped and we started to publish four issues per year. HTML version was available to the reader from 2014.

Individual accepted manuscript will be published as soon as it is ready, by adding to the "current" volume's Table of Contents.

Publication Ethics

Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology follows the guidelines of COPE.

Authorship

The corresponding author is responsible for all the information of these forms. He/she will confirm that all the authors have read the manuscript before submission. The following person(s) will be authors:

  • concept. research question and study design
  • data collection or processing

Any person only involved in writing the manuscript or analyzing the data will not be the author or corresponding author.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is considered to occur when large chunks of text have been cut-and-pasted. Minor plagiarism without dishonest intent is relatively frequent. For example, when an author reuses parts of an introduction from his/her earlier paper.

Selected manuscripts submitted to the Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology are scanned by two software: iThenticate (Crossref Similarity Check) and Plagiarism detector in order to avoid academic dishonesty. Accepted manuscript must have similar words of less than 10%.

This initiative helps the editor to verify the originality of submitted manuscript.

Conflict of interest

All authors of the submitted manuscript are requested to disclose any actual or potential conflict of interest including any financial, personal or other relationships with other people or organizations within two years of beginning the submitted work that could inappropriately influence, or be perceived to influence, their work. Please download the pdf file, fill and submit by each author separately.

Duplicate Publication

If part of a contribution that an author wishes to submit to Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology has appeared or will appear elsewhere, the author must specify the details in the covering letter accompanying the Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology submission. Consideration by the Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology is possible if the main result, conclusion, or implications are not apparent from the other work, or if there are other factors, for example, if the other work is published in a language other than English.

Bioethics

In case of manuscript reporting experiment on animal/human subject, the corresponding author must confirm that the experiment was performed in accordance with relevant guidelines and regulations. The manuscript must include a statement identifying the institutional committee approving the experiment. Sex and other characteristics of animals that may influence results must be described. Details of housing and husbandry must be included where they are likely to influence experimental results.

Informed Consent Guidelines

The research article related to clinical trial must have a statement that an informed consent document was filled-up by the volunteer/patient. The subjects in the study must participate willingly, having been adequately informed about the research.  In case of children, the researcher must first obtain the permission of parents in addition to the consent of the children. Informed consent documents should be written at a level appropriate to the subject population, generally at an 8th grade reading level. A best practice is to have a colleague or friend read the informed consent document for comprehension before submission with the IRB application.

Video Component of Methodology

One of the methodologies of Research Article must be in the video form that will help the reader to understand the quality of research methodology. It will be prepared by the authors. Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology will not take any responsibility to prepare it. The video must be submitted in MP4 format with subtitle. The addition of voice is usually discouraged. Each video component will be reviewed by the expert.

The first step is the submission of manuscript according to the Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology guidelines. Internal editorial review will be completed within 2 weeks. If the manuscript is considered for external peer-review, then our scriptwriter will translate one of the methodologies of the manuscript into a video script within a week. The video script will be sent to the corresponding author to shoot the video by him/herself. There will be subtitle in the video clip(s). Voice narration is discouraged. Once the video clip(s) will be received by us, then both the manuscript and video clip(s) will be reviewed by external peer-reviewer.

We encourage the readers to use the video clip(s) for educational and teaching purposes, including embedding the video clip(s) into their laboratory homepage. In addition, author(s) can cite the video component of the methodology in his/her future publication.

Publication Fee

The author will not be charged in the form of submission fee, article processing fee or publication fee. It is completely free.

The video component of the methodology is prepared by the authors and there is no charge to publish it.

Designing Cover Page of the Research Article

Your published research paper with a cover page makes a good impression. We have a template. You can provide the photograph of your choice related to article content. We encourage your participation in designing the cover page of your research article.

Data-Availability Statement

Any corresponding author while submitting a manuscript of CLINICAL TRIAL must give a Data-Availability Statement. The data will be behind means, medians, and variance measures presented in the results, tables, and figures, and not just those summary statistics. It must be available in the public repository (for example, https://osf.io/) and must give access when the Editor-in-Chief of Bangladesh Journal of Pharmacology request the corresponding author to allow the original data of the clinical trial to verify. Failure or refusal to provide these data upon request during reviewing of the manuscript will justify the rejection of the manuscript. If the corresponding author refuses or fails to provide requested data after publication, the author may be asked to withdraw the article otherwise the publisher may retract the article. Authors are expected to maintain all original data for a minimum of 3 years after the final publication date of their article.
