Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus has a negative impact on the cerebral vasculature, affecting both the macro and microvascular systems. Ischemic stroke is commonly included among macrovascular ones. This study was designed to evaluate the 90 days outcome of large artery atherosclerosis stroke in diabetic patients.

Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted on all the patients, both diabetic and non-diabetic, diagnosed as a case of large artery atherosclerosis stroke, attending the Stroke and Nero-intervention Clinic, Inpatient and Outpatient department, Cardiovascular and Stroke Centre; Super Specialized Hospital, Department of Neurology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, during September 2022 to February 2024. A total of 46 patients (28 diabetic and 18 non-diabetic) were included for this study.

Result: This study analyzed 46 patients with large artery atherosclerosis stroke, comparing their age, sex and ethnicity. The mean age of diabetic patients was slightly lower (61.4±12.5years) compared to non-diabetic patients (63.5±16.2years), but this difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.621). Diabetic patients had a higher frequency of large artery atherosclerosis 60.9% and poor functional outcomes at 90 days (p= 0.04). Large-artery atherosclerosis had significantly poor functional outcomes in diabetic patients (p = 0.002) at 90 days in comparison to non-diabetics.

Conclusion: Frequency of large artery atherosclerosis stroke was higher in diabetic patients, with a significantly poor functional outcome at 90 days in comparison to non-diabetics.
