Forensic Insights into Unnatural Deaths in Khulna Region: A Demographic Analysis of Autopsy Findings

Background: The number of unnatural deaths has been steadily climbing up over the years. There is a clear absence of effective intervention, despite the growing body of empirical evidence showing an increase in violent crimes, accidents, and mental health disorders that result in fatalities. Such incidents are become more concerning, especially in Khulna, a district in southwest Bangladesh, where high fatality rates are made worse by environmental stresses, socioeconomic difficulties, and rapid urbanization.
Objective: The aim of the current study is to conduct a statistical examination of unnatural deaths occurred in the Khulna region and provide an analysis of demographic characteristics of the deceased.
Methodology: This study has applied a quantitative research method, utilising secondary data for statistical analysis. The dataset comprises findings of 519 preliminary autopsy reports from Khulna Medical College Hospital for the year of 2022, starting from 1st January till 21st December.
Results: This study offers a thorough demographic and epidemiological summary of unnatural fatalities in the Khulna area in 2022. Though the predominance of male decedents (53.56%) and a considerable female proportion (46.44%) suggest a rather balanced but gender-sensitive vulnerability to unnatural mortality. Leading causes—hanging (39.11%) and poisoning (28.32%)—suggest major public health issues with suicide and self-harm that call for improved mental health services and suicide prevention initiatives. Additionally, significant rates of murder (10.98%) and road traffic accidents (9.06%) expose the ongoing toll accidents and violence carry.
Conclusion: Future public health campaigns, law enforcement tactics, and community education initiatives could all be built on the results of this study. Understanding the factors and demographic groups most impacted by unnatural deaths helps policymakers and healthcare professionals to better focus their resources and efforts toward prevention safety.
