From Awareness to Action: Implementing Preventive Mechanisms against Sexual Harassment in the University of Rajshahi

Abstract

Sexual harassment within higher educational institutions remains a critical global challenge, demanding urgent and comprehensive preventive strategies. This paper explores the transition from mere awareness-raising initiatives to the practical implementation of effective, sustainable preventive mechanisms against sexual harassment with a specific focus on the University of Rajshahi. Drawing on international human rights standards, institutional frameworks, and institutional policies, the study identifies key structural and cultural factors such as power imbalances, stigma, lack of reporting mechanisms, and limited institutional accountability that contribute to the persistence of harassment on campus. It emphasizes the role of university administration, faculty, student bodies, and civil society in creating a safe and inclusive academic environment. By integrating policy reforms, institutional accountability, and student-led advocacy, the paper proposes a context-specific framework for prevention, arguing that coordinated, rights-based interventions are essential for universities to move beyond awareness and take meaningful action against sexual harassment.
