A Proposal for Standardized Ultrasound Services: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Quality, Safety and Patient-Centered Care

Abstract

Ultrasound (US) is one of the most frequently performed diagnostic imaging procedures and is increasingly used across public and private healthcare facilities in Bangladesh. The quality of an US examination depends not only on the knowledge and technical skill of the physician performing the scan but also on coordinated participation by report composers, attendants, administrative personnel, patients and hospital management. Errors in patient identification, examination selection, image documentation, report composition, communication and report delivery can compromise patient safety and reduce confidence in the service. This article proposes a practical hospital-level guideline for standardized US services. The framework defines the responsibilities of the physician, computer typist or report composer, US attendant, patient and hospital management. Emphasis is placed on patient identification, privacy, infection prevention, standardized scanning and reporting, communication, proofreading, appropriate use of templates, confidentiality and quality assurance. Adoption of such multidisciplinary guidelines may reduce preventable errors, improve workflow and contribute to more consistent, patient-centred US services.
