Abstract

Background: Fingers are highly specialized part of hand for prehension, allows certain sensations and important aesthetic feature. Fingertip injury causes significant functional and aesthetic defects with great impact on patient’s quality of life. This study was conducted to evaluate the outcome of oblique triangular neurovascular island flap for coverage of fingertip defect distal to distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint.

Materials and methods: A quasi experimental study was conducted in the department of Plastic Surgery of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS). Total 22 patients with 25 fingertip defects distal to DIP joint was included in the study from 1st September, 2020 to 31st August 2021.

Results: The mean age was found 26.32 ± 9.91 years with range from 13 to 45 years. Majority 16(72.73%) cases were injured due to trauma. Mean dimension of wound was 1.40 ±0.28 cm2. The mean dimension of the flap was 2.54 ± 0.51 cm2. Total 21(84%) cases had recovered without complications. More than two third (84%) cases were found good, 4(16%) were satisfactory.

Conclusion: The main advantages of oblique triangular neurovascular island flap replacing like with like tissue under less extensive surgery and under minimum resources, making it more feasible fingertip reconstruction.
