Abstract

Public libraries are very important social organizations in building knowledge based society. There are two types of public libraries in Bangladesh i.e. Government public libraries and Non-Government public libraries. This article concentrates on the status of Non-Government public libraries in Bangladesh. There is very few literature on Non-Government public libraries in Bangladesh. Currently there are 972 Non-Government public libraries running in Bangladesh. In gathering data on Non-Government public libraries in Bangladesh, the Directory of Non-Government Public Libraries published by National Book Centre is considered. A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) has been conducted to acquire comprehensive information about the status of Non-Government public libraries in Bangladesh. Eventually some problems of Non-Government public libraries have been addressed and as remedial measures a number of recommendations have been put forward by the authors.

Nafiz Zaman Shuva, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Dhaka

Nafiz Zaman Shuva is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Information Science & Library Management, University of Dhaka. Nafiz is Erasmus Mundus Scholar for the 2009-2011 academic sessions. He has more than 20 research publications in his credit. Nafiz is the founder President of the Bangladesh Association of Young Researchers (BAYR). He is one of the ASIS&T international paper contest winner 2004. Nafiz is actively involved with Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) and is working as Research and Publication Secretary of LAB. He is the Managing Editor of Journal of the Bangladesh Association of Young Researchers (JBAYR) and the Eastern Librarian.His research interest includes digital library system development, mobile applications in libraries and education institutions, e-government , information science education and its related aspects.

Rowshon Akter, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Dhaka

Rowshon Akter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. She has successfully completed her B. A. (Hons.) and MA from the same department and secured first class first position in both her examinations. Before joining in Dhaka University she worked as Photographic Officer including the charge of projects at Bangladesh National Scientific and Technical Documentation Centre (BANSDOC).
