Role of Infection Prevention and Control in Reducing Healthcare-Associated Infections: A Contemporary Perspective

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) continue to threaten patient safety, prolong hospital stays, increase mortality, and drive healthcare costs worldwide. Infection prevention and control (IPC) is the primary strategy to prevent HAIs and limit the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This perspective synthesizes current evidence and practice priorities for strengthening IPC across health systems. Core IPC measures—hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, aseptic technique, personal protective equipment, surveillance, and isolation—reduce infections most effectively when implemented as bundled interventions and supported by behavior-change strategies. Successful programs depend on institutional leadership, multidisciplinary IPC teams, clear policies, reliable supplies and infrastructure, and routine surveillance with feedback. In low- and middle-income settings, pragmatic adaptations (alcohol-based hand rub, simplified surveillance, task-shifting) offer high-impact, cost-effective gains. Integration of IPC with antimicrobial stewardship and broader patient-safety initiatives amplifies benefits by lowering infection incidence and reducing selection pressure for resistant organisms. Emerging technologies (rapid diagnostics, automated monitoring, enhanced decontamination) hold promise but require evaluation for cost-effectiveness and alignment with human factors. Sustainable IPC demands predictable financing, policy support, and equity-focused implementation to protect vulnerable populations and healthcare workers alike. Framing IPC as a core health-system investment will advance patient safety, curb AMR, and improve preparedness for outbreaks. Continued evaluation of scalable interventions and adaptation to local contexts is essential to achieve sustained reductions in HAIs.
